Glossary term

Local-first

A stance about where the default value should happen, not a purity test.

Local-first means the setup prioritizes running, storing, or processing key parts locally by default, even if some cloud use still exists around the edges. Category: Runtime / formats Related topics: 0 Related resources: 0

Why this term matters

It helps people make calmer privacy and ownership decisions, but it becomes counterproductive when it turns into a purity rule that blocks a useful hybrid workflow.

Examples

  • A local-first stack may still use cloud models for one narrow task if the trade-off is explicit and controlled.
  • Desktop apps often feel local-first even when the broader workflow is still partly hybrid.
